History, our purposes

Popularization of MCP’s life work. Establishing connections among the various branches of Arts.
The Circle consist of artiststs whose value judgment reflects MCP intellectuality and artistic philosophy, namely
- Classical figurative forms based on traditions, humanism, technical superiority
The Friendship Circle is proud of its achievements. At the beginning, after the second world war it was the first artistic society targeting professional goals.
New but traditional at the same time, since most of the organizations playing impotant role in the artistic and social structure were established in the blueprint of Szirnyei Merse Pál Society.
The idea of the society is associated to Frigye Matzon, whose atelier at Kelenhegy was given at the disposal of the circle of artists, to which also MCP belonged. After the decease of MCP in 1981, this circle of friends kept on meeting on various locations either at Matzon's plase or at our nominal master's atelier in  Ménesi Street, which by unrelenting efforts of the painter's daughter – Dr. Csillag Pálné Éva – was officially licensed and qualified as public gallery  and memorial place.
Just before his death Matzon had left the cohesive circle of friends  in charge of Mrs Csillag. At that time joined the group  J. Szalatnay, who proposed to modify the platform of the friends into a legally licensed artistic society, something in semblance to the society Szirnyei Merse Pál .
The ambitious idea incurred the prospect of difficulties unprecedented, since short of governing rules in this filed, the process of legalization seemed almost impossible. Nevertheless the  Act of Association being in force even today  was enacted by 1989.
The artist members and artist sponsors of the friendship circle come together even today in the atelier of the denominating  master in line with its  function in friendly and informal manner on the first Thursday of each month.
The collections of the exhibition under the title “Homage to the Masterful”- in Vigadó, Budapest in 1989 were made up of the works of the artists of the circle and those of their icon. This event  forty years since the political quirk had made us reminiscent for the first time about the rich artistic life we used to have and at the same instance presenting the dawn of the new one which intends to follow the model of the great predecessors.
The joint show of the Circle members at the Gallery “Box”  seems only kind of a side-show of  the inner circle, which was effectively the second one of this nature. On both events  presented a number of works of our nominal master, the same way as on organized prize winning occasions. (1988 Hedquater of the Patriotic People Front in Fadrusz Street, 1989 Gallery Bartók, 1990 at the same location, 1991 Hdq. of the Hungarian Democratic Forum in Fadrsz Str., 1993 Grand Hotel Kempinsky, 1994 Hotel Gellért, 1997......, MOM educational and cultural center, 1997 Keszthely Castle museum,  Székesfehérvár Eduacational and Cultural center   Saint Stephen, 2005 Budapest
The Friendship Circle regards the enlargement the bibliography of vital importance. Which actually go on the way in 1988 by a iconography written by Ö. Gábor Pogány, then by graphics album with the preamble of Zs. D. Fehér in 1990, by a autobiography of the arist, published in 1994. This autobiography showed up from the legacy of the Jenő Kopp, due to her daughter, who is otherwise  a member of our circle. The “Illustration book of the happy aírtis” came out in 1997 can be deservedly held for pinnacle of the the research work made by Mrs Csillag, Pálné Éva. In 2004 a richly decorated cataloque was made for the opening of the exhibition in Keszthely, which is a very instructive guide  not only for the life’s work of the master but  for the atelier museum as well.
It was in 2006 when the book – MCP the book artist written by István Bizzer - was published, which promises a delicacy to every bibliophile.
The friendship circle intends to promote the legacy of MCP by announcements of occasional donations, grants and prizes to contemporary  artists such as “MCP Award” “Audience prize of MCP Friendship Circle”  in order to patronize and  facilitate their work.
By the allocations of the prizes special considerations are given to the figurative, portraying artistry of the prospective applicants in con junction with sensitive attitude to the issues of our world.
The members of the circle regards it as a precondition for the applicant to have deep artistic connection to the Hungarian fine art traditions and in certain aspects to MCP ‘s artistic intellectuality.
The more valuable prize  called award – in parallel to Szirnyei Society – can be merited by artists who already have accomplished significantly their life’s work on being concordantly nominated by the artist members of the circle. Consequently the Artists give the prize to artist, which used to be cherished and highly valued at the modeled Szirnyei Society, too.
The public award  is nominated in general by nearly 300 laymen members of the circle
It is also traditional and respectful to the predecessors that the winners of the prizes will be admitted to membership of the circle the same way as it used to be at the Szirnyei Society. Of course there are other forms and possibilities to become a member of the circle regardless of the artistic achievements. To become an artist member of the circle the prospective member shall be nominated at least by one artist.

In 1997 the friendship Circle celebrated the tenth anniversary of its existence by the second joint exhibition of the artist members. On this occasion exceptionally our member – Barna Búza – was awarded for his life’s work, expressing our respect and gratitude to the old master for his relentless creativity, humanism, personal charm and loyalty to our Friendship Circle.
The Circle considers that its third joint and award allocating exhibition in 2000 was a notable contribution to the millennium celebration.
For this extraordinary event we made adjustments in two directions increasing the number of participant exhibitors – as it can be noticed on the most recent shows – of which we plan to make a common practice.
On the one hand we recall from the past, with the help of a few draft-like works ar present in particular with self portrays – MCP and his comrade-in-arms, a bit discretionally  chosen and accepted ancestors .
Partly because of their relation with our name-giving master, for ex. almost each of them was an apprentice of Accademia d”Ungheria in Rome, they made friends there, then because of their later cooperations or partly because many  of their relatives and descendants  joined our friendship circle. By the same token we safeguard the memories of our founding members, in this way more an more legacy caretakers are joining our exhibitions.
Besides reminiscences over the past we are open to our present and we take steps towards the new powers including the most young generation as well.  We pave the way for the contemporary artists to the Friendship Circle. We assist them room and presentation opportunity under the title “invited guest artists”should they be interested either in private way or by recommendation of the artist members of the Circle. The  participation does not oblige either party, it can turn out to be only an occasional adventure, but it can become mutually advantageous and fulfilling professional relation.
The exhibition held in the crypt of the Saint Stephen Basilica in 2007 gave opportunity not only for the artists dealing with  ecclesiastic subject-themes, but for a wider range of artistry, since the thematics of the event was based on to show  ourselves as well in the spheres of the unlimited time and space  our history, culture the beauty of the Hungarian landscape and our world as it is. The friendship circle of MCP regards the Szirnyei society as spiritual mentor and precursor to its activity, According with this, the special value of the MCP award is that it is nominated and given by artist to artists. The Circle has also the aim to bring together more and more the creating artist and the laymen public, which is expressed by the audience prizes which are allocated on the base of the votes of the public favor.

Th third joint exhibitions of the MCP friendship circle held in the MOM culture centre a special honor award was conferred to journalist publicist Palma Schelken and  to painter Viola Berki who was then active president of the Circle.
